The Who’s Who of BTS
RM
RM’s full name is Kim Namjoon, and he’s known as the band’s main rapper and leader. His stage name was originally “Rap Monster,” though he eventually shortened it and how simply goes by “RM.” Born on September 12, 1994, he got his start as a solo rapper performing under several different stage names, including Large, Stealo, and Runch Randa, and was eventually noticed by Big Hit Entertainment (the South Korean record label that formed BTS).
RM became the band’s first official member in 2010 and is the only remaining member from its original lineup. He’s known as the group’s very capable and talented leader, and he’s also usually the band’s translator on English-speaking programs since he taught himself English as a teenager by watching the American sitcom Friends. Beyond that, he was affectionately nicknamed the “god of destruction” by his bandmates since he apparently has a clumsy streak and a habit of destroying everything he touches!
Jin
Jin’s full name is Kim Seokjin. Born on December 4, 1992, he’s the oldest member of BTS and one of its main vocalists. He joined the group in 2013—and later, in 2017, he graduated from Konkuk University in South Korea with a degree in acting and art.
In addition to being a vocalist in BTS, Jin jokingly began calling himself “Worldwide Handsome,” and the nickname has been lovingly adopted by many fans. He’s also known for his love of food and cooking; he had a web series called Eat Jin for a while, and he’s the co-owner of a Japanese restaurant (called Ossu Seriomushi) located in Seoul, South Korea.
Suga
Suga’s full name is Min Yoongi. He was born on March 9, 1993—and like RM, he first started performing as a solo underground rapper. His original stage name as a rapper and producer was Gloss—and although that changed when he became a member of BTS, he’s still got more than one stage name these days.
Outside of his work with BTS, Suga performs as a solo rapper under the stage name Agust D (which is a reference to his hometown) while also being a commercial producer under the same “By Suga.” He’s described all 3 aliases as being facets of his personality, giving fans the option of seeing him in a few different ways. He’s known for being artistic, reflective, and very eloquent with his songwriting.
J-Hope
J-Hope’s full name is Jung Hoseok. He was born on February 18, 1994, and got his start as a dancer—winning multiple South Korean competitions before catching the eye of Big Hit Entertainment. In 2010, he began training as a rapper and later joined BTS as one of the group’s 3 rappers (as well as one of its best dancers).
J-Hope was the first member of BTS to launch a solo career as a rapper, songwriter, and producer. In 2022, he even released a song with Becky G (“Chicken Noodle Soup”), and the duo went on to perform it at Lollapalooza 2022, making J-Hope the first South Korean artist to become a headliner at a mainstream American music festival. He’s known for his loud, energetic, and cheerful presence—both in the band and in life!
Jimin
Jimin’s full name is Park Jimin, born on October 13, 1995. Next to J-Hope, he’s another of the group’s main dancers and a lead vocalist as well. Jimin got his start by studying dance (both ballet and contemporary) during high school. And when music starts playing, he’s always ready to bust a move! He was one of the last to join BTS in 2013.
Like other members of the band, Jimin has also started working as a solo artist (while still being an active part of BTS). He even became a global brand ambassador for Dior in January 2023 and released his first solo album in March 2023. He’s known for being kind, compassionate, and super affectionate towards his bandmates.
V
V’s full name is Kim Taehyung. He was born on December 30, 1995, and joined BTS after auditioning for Big Hit Entertainment in 2013. Before that, he grew up learning to both sing and play the saxophone! In fact, he’s even stated that he’d be a saxophonist if he hadn’t become a member of BTS. As a vocalist in BTS, he is noted for his deeper vocal range and soulful voice.
After joining BTS, V also took on several acting roles, including the historical drama Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth. He also dropped a solo album—and, when each member of BTS joined Instagram in December 2021, V also broke two Guinness World Records for being the fastest to reach 1 million and 10 million followers. He’s known for his outgoing personality, fashionable taste, and artistic sensibilities.
Jungkook
Jungkook’s full name is Jeon Jung-kook. He was born on September 1, 1997, making him the youngest member of BTS. He got his start by auditioning for the South Korean talent show Superstar K, and although he didn’t make it to the finals, he was noticed by talent agencies (including Big Hit Entertainment). Thus, he joined BTS in 2013 as a main vocalist and dancer—and he was only 15 at the time!
Jungkook also branched off into solo projects in 2022, releasing several solo tracks until his debut solo album dropped in late 2023. He also performed his first solo concert in 2023 at Good Morning America's Summer Concert Series in New York City. As a member of BTS, Jungkook is affectionately nicknamed “golden maknae” (golden youngest) or sometimes “Kookie,” and he’s known for being an upbeat, good-natured, and playful presence within the group.
