A Glossary of Popular Naruto Characters

Main Characters:

  • Naruto Uzumaki. The title character and protagonist of the show, Naruto, starts out as a young orphan and ninja-in-training. Despite his enthusiasm and happy, easygoing personality, he’s sometimes shunned by the village of Konoha because he’s the host of Kuram, the Nine-Tailed Fox—though he wins them over in time.
  • Sakura Haruno. A member of Team 7, Sakura is a kunoichi; she has superior strength and can unleash a powerful punch against her enemies. She’s also a healer, capable of mending her allies’ wounds. She’s known for her smarts, bravery, and talent.
  • Sasuke Uchiha. Also a member of Team 7 (though he later leaves the village to join Orochimaru), Sasuke starts out as Naruto’s rival, challenging him and pushing them both to excel. Sasuke is relatively cold and reserved, harboring hatred toward his brother, Itachi—although he grows to care for his teammates a great deal.
  • Kakashi Hatake. Kakashi is the leader of Team 7 and serves as a mentor figure to Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura. Despite living through many trials and tribulations in his early years, Kakashi doesn’t let it affect his teaching, and shepherds Team 7 with his trademark smarts and patience.

Secondary Characters:

  • Hinata Hyuga. Hinata Hyuga is a member of Team 8. Initially characterized by her shyness and lack of confidence, Hinata’s training centers around her desire to prove herself to her family—and she grows increasingly powerful (and confident) over time.
  • Kiba Inuzuka. Another member of Team 8, Kiba proves to be brash and impulsive as he trains to be a ninja alongside his canine companion, Akamaru.
  • Akamaru. Akamaru is Kiba’s ninja dog (and best friend). The two work together in battle, with Akamaru using his sense of smell and hearing to supplement Kiba’s skills.
  • Shino Aburame. Shino is a member of Team 8 who can control bugs and use them to absorb an enemy’s chakra. Some think he’s a little creepy because of his merciless attitude on the battlefield, though he cares for his teammates at heart.
  • Kurenai Yuhi. Kurenai is the leader of Team 8, and she’s particularly skilled in creating illusions that involve plants. She acts as a surrogate parent to Hinata during the series, helping her build up her strength.
  • Shikamaru Nara. Shikamaru is a member of Team 10, with an easygoing approach to life that belies his extreme intelligence. He’s also Naruto’s close friend and always saw Naruto as a person, even when others in the village shunned him because of his connection to Nine Tails.
  • Ino Yamanaka. Ino is another member of Team 10, and one of Sakura’s childhood friends (though they temporarily clashed due to a mutual crush on Sasuke). She’s fashionable, popular, and talented, learning both medical ninjutsu and mind-altering skills in combat.
  • Rock Lee. Rock Lee is a member of Team Guy. Despite being totally unable to use ninjutsu or genjutsu, he dedicates himself to becoming a skilled and respected ninja using only taijutsu.
  • Might Guy. Might Guy is the leader of Team Guy. He mentors Rock Lee closely and has a casual, self-proclaimed rivalry with Kakashi (with whom he enjoys competing).
  • Neji Hyuga. Neji is a member of Team Guy and Hinata’s cousin. Though he’s initially cruel to her and skeptical of Naruto, getting defeated by Naruto makes Neji reconsider his ideals and gain a new appreciation for his comrades.
  • Tenten. Tenten is a member of Team Guy. She specializes in weaponry of all kinds, from projectiles and explosives to melee weapons.

Supporting Characters:

  • Minato Namikaze. Though his part in the show is relatively small, Minato remains a beloved character. Minato was killed when his son, Naruto, was a baby—but left behind a legacy of duty and loyalty.
  • Kushina Uzumaki. Kushina is Naruto’s mother—and, like Minato, died when Naruto was still a baby. However, she was still able to help and guide Naruto through the remnants of her chakra.
  • Jiraiya. Jiraiya is a graduate of Konoha’s Ninja Academy and later Naruto’s mentor. He grows surprisingly close to Naruto, even acting as a surrogate parent—though he’s also a very talented (if irreverent) ninja.
  • Tsunade. Tsunade was also a graduate of the Ninja Academy with Jiraiya. She has an impressive reputation as the world's strongest kunoichi and greatest medical-nin.
  • Gaara of the Sand. Though he starts out as a villain, Gaara eventually changes his ways after being defeated by Naruto. From then on, he’s wiser, more empathetic, and considers Naruto his closest friend.
